Trouble Shifting Gears: One of the surest indications of a failing transmission is the inability to shift gears or difficulty shifting gears. If you drive a manual transmission, this is a sure sign of such trouble. If you drive an automatic, it may take a keener ear to avoid a breakdown situation.
Strange Noises When Shifting: Shifting should be a mostly seamless operation. If you hear strange noises when you shift, trouble shifting gears is almost the next phase. If you get your vehicle into the shop at this phase, you may be able to get by with a repair instead of a full replacement.

Discolored Transmission Fluid: If your transmission fluid is dark, it means that it has been burning from excessive friction inside the gearbox. It could also mean that it has been contaminated with metal or mother debris.
