2017 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Chicago IL
Since its production kicked off in 1986, the Jeep Wrangler has played the role of rugged compact SUV. Optimized for off-roading, while civilized enough for everyday driving, the Wrangler has always been a favorite with customers who want a SUV that can efficiently handle rough terrain. As a result, Jeep Wrangler sales have been strong over the past three-plus decades. For the 2017 model year, with Fiat Chrysler being the manufacturer, one of the Wrangler’s numerous trims is the Rubicon, which is billed as the version to go with if off-roading is the absolute priority. And that has been confirmed by some industry experts; the Rubicon trim is the winner of the “4×4 of the Decade” title from Four Wheeler magazine.
The 2017 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon is a compact SUV that seats up to four people with its two rows of seats. Passenger volume is measured at 88.4 cubic feet. Behind the seats is 12.8 cubic feet of cargo space. However, you can extend it to 56.5 cubic feet if you fold down the rear seat. At the front are a pair of low-back reclining bucket seats. You can enhance the cabin with leather upholstery, as well as heating capability on the front seats. For infotainment, the Wrangler Rubicon gets an eight-speaker stereo system that is accompanied by a complimentary one-year SiriusXM satellite radio subscription, AM/FM radio, an audio jack for connecting mobile devices, and controls mounted on the leather-wrapped steering wheel. The infotainment system can be enhanced by features such as Bluetooth, GPS navigation with a trial five-year SiriusXM Travel Link subscription, Uconnect voice command technology, a 6.5-inch touchscreen, and a 40 GB hard drive for storing digital media.
The 2017 Wrangler Rubicon is designed as a two-door SUV with a removable soft top (Black Sunrider) that covers the rear seating of the vehicle. (You can opt for a black or body-color three-piece hard top.) It rides on 17-inch polished mineral-gray wheels fitted with off-road tires. The front fascia houses a pair of LED reflector lamps that can switch on automatically depending on the amount of outdoor light. Below it are a pair of LED fog lamps for more penetrating illumination. Flanking the doors are manual fold-away mirrors.
The performance suspension on the new Jeep Wrangler Rubicon comprises Dana 44 heavy-duty front and rear axles, which have larger ring gears, stiffer and stronger housing, and larger pinion bearings than other configurations for handling added torque requirements. Plus, both axles are equipped with electronically-controlled, “air-actuated” Tru-Lok locking differentials to provide added traction, as opposed to unlocked axles. The power rack-and-pinion steering on the Rubicon contributes to maintaining directional stability when on the highway, as well as providing a tighter turning diameter for parking maneuvers.
Powering the 2017 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon is the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine, which provides 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Although a 6-speed manual transmission is standard, you can go with a 5-speed automatic transmission instead for more convenient gear shifting. The drivetrain that the Wrangler Rubicon uses is the Rock-Trac part-time four-wheel drive system, which includes the aforementioned Tru-Lock differentials. The Rock-Track drivetrain includes a low 4:1 gear ratio that allows the Rubicon to crawl at a lower speed for greater control and greater low-end torque available at the wheels.
For protection in the event of an auto collision, the 2017 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon has airbags facing the driver and front passenger. The front impact airbags are designed to sense impact severity and inflate accordingly for an added level of security. Electronic stability control is on board for keeping you on the intended path of travel, and it is accompanied by electronic roll mitigation to reduce the potential for wheel lift during severe or evasive driving maneuvers. Other standard safety features on the 2017 Rubicon include speed control for allowing you to set and maintain a desired speed, four-wheel disc brakes for keeping stopping distances short, traction control for detecting slipping wheels and applying brake pressure to them, and hill start assist for preventing rollback when starting it from a stopped position on a hill. For security, the Rubicon has the Sentry Key theft-deterrent system, which combines remote keyless entry with engine immobilization ability to prevent unauthorized vehicle operation. (Fiat Chrysler gives you the ability to add a panic alarm to the security system.)
